Employment Laws in the United Arab Emirates

Employment Contract: Employers (other than those situated in a free zone) are required to issue a MOHRE standard form offer letter containing the key terms and conditions of employment to employees. The MOHRE  employment contract must be in English and Arabic.  

Employers in the free zones may be required to issue a bilingual free zone standard form employment Contract and it is common practice for employers to issue supplemental employment terms to employees based on an employer’s standard terms.

Minimum Wages: At present, there is no minimum wage for employees in the UAE save in respect of Emirati employees,  however a low minimum threshold of AED 5,000 per month applies for employees to count for  Emiratization purposes. 

Employer Taxes: Employer Taxes are approximately 20.85% - 23.72% of Gross salary. 

Working Hours: The working hours in the UAE consist of a maximum of eight hours per day and forty-eight hours per week.  

Annual Leave: Employees who have completed at least one full year receive 30 days of paid leave per year. 

Probation Period: The probationary period for employees ranges from 3 – 6 months. 

 
 
 

Notice Period: The employee has to serve 30 days to 90 days depending upon the length of service. The notice period for probationary employees before termination ranges from 7- 14 days. 

Termination: The Federal Law grants both employers and employees the right to terminate the employment contract, should sufficient notice be given, and the circumstances fall within those defined by the  Ministry of Labor.  

Severance Pay: At the end of an employee’s contract, they may be entitled to receive compensation. The severance payment amount depends on different factors like the type of contract, reason for dismissal, and length of employment.
